In attendance were major thinkers and investors in the space, including Whitfield Diffie, a hero of Mário Yaksetig and inspiration to David Chaum. Mário had a fanboy moment in the Telegram after meeting him and shared some conclusions upon his return. Mário also recently started a cryptography blog which might interest more technical readers.
Some perhaps more personal news – on Wednesday 6th March 2024, I (Patcrypt) was elected to the XX Council after an extremely short election – a complete coincidence of when I timed my candidacy. I am extremely grateful for everyone who backed me so quickly with their stake and will strive to serve the council and any community proposals with fair consideration and diligence. This also means I feel somewhat more close to the goings on within XX so I can prepare updates to this site and get good news on here as fast as possible!
The Carbon Browser has announced several key integrations to XX Network projects including hosting the wrapped token and including Phoenixx in its dApp store.
Three grants were awarded to the XX Network to integrate cMixx, VoteXX and cMixx+ into the Worldcoin ecosystem to further enhance privacy in users’ interactions and governance.
BitFashioned announced the first Alpha release of Echoexx (now Phoenixx) at the end of January 2024 and then a public Alpha in February. They recently extolled its virtues in an X thread on 7th March 2024. It is a web/wasm app so that it can run in any browser and provides a private messaging service whilst using a web3 identity. BitFashioned consists of Bernardo Cardoso, Baltasar Aroso and Mário Yaksetig.
Updating the xxDK (the development kit for the cMixx network) has been another recent priority, with more languages being integrated to reach a wider skills base / preference of developer. Rick has been spotted through the Discord’s development section making updates and in February 2024 described some of the work in an X space. Libraries are now available for iOS via CocoaPods, for Android via a Maven package, and for the web via an NPM package. Having more teams creating more tools and products is an ongoing goal which this seeks to aid. Rick presented some example apps for multiple platforms as part of a webinar for a hackathon in March. Grants are still available for any wannabe XX dev or group of devs to undertake projects that utilise the network.
A proposed update to cMixx (entitled cMixx+) was published by David Chaum and Mário Yaksetig which appears to suit specific applications for the mixnet whereby the availability and use of secret codes can be sped up and made more private, by introducing a different type of message. This is especially relevant in the realms of the recent CBDC trials and David’s new “Better than Money” initiative, as well for integration in one of the three Worldcoin grant projects recently announced.
A series of community AMAs are taking place, the first one of which happened in conjunction with the Turkish Telegram community on Sunday November 26th, 2023. Use cases for cMixx+ were one of a number of prevalent topics. You can read and listen to the whole thing on this page.
The grants programme has been revamped and simplified. Bernie from Bitfashioned queried the community to flesh out various aspects of the programme in December and it launched in January 2024. Building more and useful dApps is key to getting use from the network and raising its profile and this has been stated as a key priority with the Foundation.
The official Telegram channel has now been taken over by the community after the council and some community members lobbied the Foundation and original team. Now the community can at least talk about price in there!
The BitFashioned Team and David are apparently continuing work on what was once known as xxBFT – the consensus model for the future – which is now called Phoenixx. It will eventually be a candidate to replace XX’s current consensus. Mário and Bernie responded after a beady-eyed community member pointed out the paper’s publication in the main Telegram group. Here’s a bit more detail.
Bridges are a top priority. Community and council member Bulldog successfully acquired an XX development grant to complete the work on an EVM bridge in January 2024. With the development might of BitFashioned, this will enable a wrapped XX Coin to appear on more DEXs which raises visibility, volume and the potential to have XX Coin listed on more CEXs. This work will also allow the previously wrapped XXC token on the XRPL to be bridged not long thereafter so those holding can frictionlessly go back the native XX Coin.
Postage, which is akin to ‘gas’ in Ethereum is another top priority. The Foundation have found a way to catalyse this being brought into existence by initially being custodian – whereby those wanting to use cMixx in bulk would buy XX coin (which powers the postage) directly from the Foundation to start with, and the proceeds compensating the nodes who commit resources to the network. This requires development of a blockchain/cMixx integration of postage which is apparently now underway.
A big push to make all the current documentation more accessible and up to date is underway with Keith Millette leading the charge. Docusaurus is the platform of choice.
Project Tourbillon, a CBDC project actively piloted with the Bank of International Settlements and the Swiss National Bank has published their results in November 2023. The design incorporates cMixx as part of David’s eCash 2.0 design, which he is also using to produce his new ‘Better than Money’ idea, both of which would ultimately be a huge use case for Postage and the XX Coin.
The Rumour Mill
Here are some things you should take with a relative grain of salt – however they have been uttered in public channels by people within various teams inside XX Network but may amount to nothing.
- Community building is a big priority and avenues such as coin-earning platforms to help engage and retain users are being negotiated with.
- More wallet integrations are rumoured to be nearing completion. The more the merrier!
- Mário Yaksetig has been seen in the Telegram talking about an “XXVPN” and “Private XX Cash (eCash 3.0)” initiatives that he plans to flesh out soon.
- Interviews with prominent figures in the privacy and wider crypto space are always in various stages of discussion/organisation/execution.
